A Job Transition is a Project

Job risk and change is not something just reserved for global pandemics. People listening to this episode years from now will still face the same reality: going through the process of looking for a new job is challenging, especially if you’re looking to transition from one industry to another.

But hey, we’re project managers! So how about we look at job transition as a project?

That’s the mindset shared by my guest today. Herb Thompson is the author of The Transition Mission: A Green Beret’s approach to transition from the military. Though Herb’s mission is focused on helping veterans, you’ll find today’s discussion relevant regardless of whether you have a military background. The Power of Character Strengths

The idea of strengths-based leadership is not new to you, right? You’ve likely been taught that you should focus on your strengths, and lead that way with your team members. We’ve talked about strengths from multiple angles, but today I want to share yet another.

Ruth Pearce is a friend--someone I dearly respect as a colleague. She’s a strong advocate not only for strengths in general, but specifically with character strengths, and how they apply to those of us who lead people and teams. Beyond all that, she’s just a wonderful person.

In this episode, you’ll hear Ruth talk about her book Be a Project Motivator. Learn more about Ruth at projectmotivator.com/. Take the free Character Strengths Assessment at https://www.viacharacter.org/survey/account/register

Agile: Not Just for Software Projects

We often think of agile approaches being used for systems or software-related projects. Our guest today is Gil Broza, who recently published a book entitled Agile for Non-Software Teams. In today’s discussion, Gil and I talk about his agile journey, what he means when he refers to agile, and some of the common mistakes people make when embarking on an agile journey. Gil will even share some thoughts about applying agile at home. I look forward to sharing that discussion with you today.

Impossible Conversations

Globally, we’re at a challenging time with the coronavirus pandemic still growing in most countries. Challenges like this can cause difficult conversations, where people can disagree vehemently on policy decisions at a national level—or on whether or not groceries should be sprayed down at the household level.

In my home country, it’s an election year, which increasingly causes people to lose their minds when talking with people who think differently than them.

But beyond the current events of the day, let’s face it.... If you lead projects and teams, there are difficult stakeholders. There are difficult bosses and clients, and in order for us to successfully move initiatives along, we need to find a way to make sure we have shared understanding and expectations, and we often need to find a way to get the buy-in of people who just aren’t buying in!

I’m excited to introduce you to a remarkable person. Peter Boghossian is co-author of a new book entitled How to Have Impossible Conversations. It’s a book about influence, conversations, and so much more, and I can’t wait to share this discussion with you.

Follow Peter on Twitter at twitter.com/peterboghossian.
