Leading in an Age of Distractions

We live in an age of distractions. Back in episode 144, we talked with Cal Newport about his book Deep Work. In episode 177 we talked with Adam Alter about his book Irresistible. Both books provide helpful insights into how to stay focused when we’re surrounded by so many distractions.

As much as I benefited from those books and the discussions with the authors, I recently came across a book that I personally think is even more effective at giving us tangible skills to deal with the distractions around us. The title is Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life, by Nir Eyal.

In this discussion with Nir, you’ll get an insightful look at what distraction is and what’s really causing it--spoiler alert--it’s not just the tech we’re surrounded by. Nir will make it clear why just banning all tech and going back to brick phone is not the answer. That’s good! He’ll discuss a deeply researched technique called ACT that I’ve been personally using to help overcome distractions. And, if you’re a parent, he shares some ideas on how to help your kids to become indistractable.

I consider Indistractable a must-read, and I can’t wait to share that discussion with you today.

We're All Project Managers (And Salespeople)

For years I've been on a mission to help people realize we're all project managers. Regardless of title, if you have a job, you have deadlines you have to hit, with multiple steps required to get there. Maybe not by title, but by role, we're all project managers. It's a basic skill set we all need.

In this episode, we talk with Oren Klaff about his newest book, Flip the Script: Getting People to Think Your Idea Is Their Idea. Oren made his mark in the book world with his blockbuster Pitch Anything. Flip the Script picks up where Pitch Anything left off, and today the bundle of energy and ideas that is Oren Klaff is here to share some ideas for how you can be more persuasive.

PPP 267 | (Video) How Do You Reduce The Waste Around You?

Wasted time. Wasted energy. Wasted stress. In our project and organizational environments, we're surrounded by waste.

In this < 3-minute video, I share some thoughts from a recent keynote to a group of global leaders regarding agile.

When you look at the world through the lens of eliminating waste, there's no shortage of opportunities. Good project management practices seek to eliminate waste, regardless of whether you're using a formal agile approach or not.

Let Me Hear From You!

I'd love to hear from you! What are some examples of where you've seen waste recently? Whether within your organization or--as I share in the video--somewhere in the general public, such as an airport. Where do you see opportunities to reduce waste? And what are some lessons you've learned about identifying and eliminating waste?

Let's connect on LinkedIn and discuss! I'd love to hear your thoughts! Also, what have you been learning lately? What are you reading? Please e-mail me () or leave a message on our Listener Feedback Line (847-550-3747). I look forward to hearing from you!

Unlocking Creativity

Most of us are in situations where we regularly face challenges that require creative approaches. Yet here’s an interesting dynamic that I’ve observed with organizations and teams. Managers often say that they want their teams to be creative--to think outside the box--so to speak. Yet when the creative ideas are presented, the leaders effectively shut them down. We want innovation but we don’t. That’s kind of weird, right?

We're joined again today by one of my favorite guests, Mike Roberto. Mike's most recent book is entitled Unlocking Creativity, and, in typical Mike Roberto fashion, it's packed with evidence-based insights that are entertaining to read.

Learn more about Mike at his very active blog at http://michael-roberto.blogspot.com/. Also, check out our previous discussions with Mike:

PPP 265 | (Video) Is Project Management Just Dumb Luck?

Is project management "the art of creating the illusion that any outcome is the result of a series of predetermined, deliberate acts when, in fact, it was dumb luck"?

In Harold Kerzner's classic book on project management, he suggests that many companies run their projects with that mindset.

In this 3-minute video, I share a lesson from a drone experiment and include a reference to the "leader attribution error"--something I learned when interviewing the late Harvard professor J. Richard Hackman back in episode 33. (earn some free PDUs by listening).

Let Me Hear From You!

I'd love to hear from you! What are your thoughts about the leader attribution error? Do leaders tend to get more credit than they deserve when things go well--and more blame than they deserve when things go poorly? What's the role of dumb luck when it comes to delivering projects?

Let's connect on LinkedIn and discuss! I'd love to hear your thoughts! Also, what have you been learning lately? What are you reading? Please e-mail me () or leave a message on our Listener Feedback Line (847-550-3747). I look forward to hearing from you!
